2.
Your heart’s essence I placed above my bed,
Sweet fragrant joy of youth, you bid me sleep;
To rising dreams, surf swirled within my head
Our limbs entwined in passion, longing, deep.
You came with night, in dark brocades of green,
A silk-cloud of secrets: in sparkling light;
Drifting out of shadows, in palest opaline
A lover’s chant beneath Moon’s blanket bright.
Our spirits swayed on lost hills: with velvet touch,
Warm, eternal embrace: a wish-kiss of ages;
Reclining with your soul, on a divine couch
Such infidelity paid with deceitful wages:
My demands seem insufficient, made in duress
Tho I pledged my whole, and all that I possess.
3.
Truly cursed am I by Love’s wild desire
Haunted and inspired in a land of ice and flame;
Your scented breath of spice taunts in me a fire
Yet still I am addicted to the sensual game.
If I loved yet more, the whole world might melt,
And you alone might escape the fiery heat;
And, that I in mere ash and cinders dwelt
But still in adoration beneath your feet.
Still yet I am frozen in darkest fear
A bird locked in bars of a cold bronze cage;
My pitiful state reflected in a crystal tear
Frozen on the cheek of pale ancient age.
Yet do I lust to the burning sun of your heart;
And suffer the cold and forlorn Lover’s art.
