Schlick's Anti-Metaphysical Philosophy in Five Minutes

Five Minute Philosophy.

"The meaning of a proposition is the method of its verification."

'The only truths which are self-evident to reason are statements which are true as a matter of definition, such as the statements of formal logic and mathematics. The truth of all other statements must be evaluated with reference to empirical evidence.' (General Theory of Knowledge)

- Friedrich Albert Moritz Schlick (1882 - 1936).

Schlick was part of the group "First Vienna Circle" and the founding fathers of Logical positivism. He was leaving a University building for another class when a former student of his, Johann Nelbock approached him and then pulled out a pistol and shot him. Nelbock claimed that Schlick's anti-metaphysical philosophy had "interfered with his moral restraint". After the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany in 1938 the assassin was released on license after serving 2 years of a 10 year sentence.
