Sometimes I find myself looking for something peaceful,
beautiful, contemplative (to make myself feel good) and then I get hit by a
sort of 'intellectual Explosive Idea' which brings me rapidly to my senses and
destroys that 'egocentric' view of life... I realize that the world isn't
going to conform to the way that I want, it is just the way that it is.
However, this doesn't prevent people trying (and sometimes succeeding) to
change the order of things... any one particular point of view becomes contradictory, and can evade common sense I
suppose.
This photograph is by Diane Arbus, taken in Central Park NY and
called: 'Child with a toy hand grenade in Central Park' about 1962. It goes
with a quote by Alan Watts: "In known history, nobody has had such
capacity for altering the universe than the people of the United States of
America. And nobody has gone about it in such an aggressive way..." So
here is the idea: a person might go to the park for quiet time... maybe
meditate or something profound, and he or she gets there and... from out behind
a tree runs a kid with a couple of hand grenades - shouting and screaming. It
is chaos in action. The question is: do we try to avoid or ignore the chaos,
confront it (try to change it) or accept it as a dimension of existence? Well
maybe it's not 'profound' time in the park... maybe just an ice-cream and a
stroll, but something or someone happens to try and screw it all up.
Nevertheless its a direct confrontation with darkness of the human mind!
All that I am left with is pondering the notion that the complex dynamics of the world are a direct reflection of the human mind. There are many people offering quick-fix sort of solutions to all the problems in life, but the fundamental force of change is ourselves. It isn't intellectual... it is merely attitude. When I am looking outward I am intentionally seeking validation of the essence within me, which is the way I would like the world to be. Therefore I need to deliver my peace to the world rather than attempting to secure it. This becomes a revolutionary concept; We are the peace and beauty of the world.
